Yorn

Origins

Very little is publicly known about Yorn’s early years, and he likes it that way.

What is known:
He arrived in Snowdrift Bay several winters ago just after a record-breaking blizzard. While most townsfolk were indoors rationing cocoa, a massive shaggy figure appeared at the gates of town carrying a backpack, a rolled-up newspaper, and a soft-serve cone (which had not melted, due to the cold).

After a few days, he knocked politely on the door of the Snowdrift Bay Gazette, introduced himself as “Yorn. Just Yorn.”
And asked if they were hiring.

Pierre, the mime, shook his head that they were not.
Yorn handed over three perfectly written sample articles to Mr. Henderson, the editor of the Gazette. One involved a haunted shovel that refused to be retired.

He was hired the next day.

Species & Cryptid Status

Yorn is, indisputably, a yeti. But he bristles at the term “cryptid.”

He once told a tourist,

“I have an address, a favorite mug, and an opinion on municipal snow plow funding. That makes me a resident, not a myth.”

When pressed, Yorn will admit that he used to live somewhere called “The White Still,” a place high in the peaks beyond common mapping. Whether it was a monastery, a village, or something stranger is never clarified.

He has a strong connection to winter, silence, and things left unsaid. Some suspect he can speak to snow, or at least understand its moods.

Physical Description

Yorn stands a little over eight seven tall, covered in thick silver-white fur that always seems to carry a light dusting of frost. His eyes are calm, pale blue, and profoundly tired in a gentle sort of way. He sometimes wears a scarf knitted by Elara, his wife, and often carries a thermos that smells faintly of pine and dark chocolate.

Despite his size, Yorn is quiet-footed. People are often surprised when they turn around and find him standing silently behind them, politely waiting to say something thoughtful.

Personality

Yorn is the straight man in a town that doesn’t know what a straight line looks like.

He’s calm, observant, and deeply compassionate—but also carries a dry wit and a capacity for subtle, deliberate chaos when pushed.

He tries to avoid getting angry, but when he does, the consequences are memorable. Several out-of-towners who attempted to scam or insult the residents of Snowdrift Bay were last seen flying over the mountain range, flung skyward by Yorn with polite but implacable force.

He is especially protective of those he loves—his wife Elara, their balloon animal dog David, and his circle of close friends.

Profession

Yorn is a journalist for the Snowdrift Bay Gazette.
He covers local interest stories, investigative reporting, and occasionally writes scathing op-eds about improperly sorted recycling.

His writing style is clear, slightly poetic, and refreshingly blunt when needed. He’s known for pieces like:

  • “The Rake Is Not a Resident (But Is Definitely More Responsible Than Spike)”

  • “Interview With a Tumbleweed: Roberta Speaks”

  • “The Old Lady Strikes Again: A Public Safety Guide”

Notable Lore & Moments

  • The “Helen Incident”: Yorn once negotiated a civil settlement with an insurance agent named Jeremy who tried to stall, delay, and avoid paying Yorn after a no-fault accident. Instead of pressing charges, Yorn made him change his name to Helen as penance. He still finds this hilarious.

  • The Sky Tosses: A running gag in town. When someone deeply offends the collective dignity of Snowdrift Bay, Yorn gently but firmly throws them into the sky. No one knows how he aims them. But they always land somewhere inconvenient.

  • The “David Situation”: David is a blue balloon animal who moves like a real dog. Yorn refers to him as his child. He feeds him invisible food. No one asks.

Relationships

  • Elara (Wife): His anchor and favorite person. The vampire bookseller to his yeti journalist. Their love is quiet, fierce, and deeply rooted. They share a home, a dog, and a thousand small rituals that hold them steady.

  • David (Balloon Animal Dog): Yorn calls him “son.” David occasionally floats into ceilings and must be retrieved via ladder or kind words.

  • Friends: Ramses, Spike, Brenda, Philip, Sir Reginald, Pierre, Oyuki, and others. Yorn often plays the role of mediator or protector in the group. He tolerates their chaos with fond patience… until it becomes too much.

  • The Old Lady: Yorn is more often on the receiving end of the Old Lady’s fury than anyone else in town by a longshot. She has tried to hit him with her handbag seven times. He still doesn’t know why.

Quirks and Secrets

  • He reads cookbooks but rarely cooks.

  • His scarf contains a tiny embroidered map to someplace called “The Listening Pass.”

  • He’s terrified of puppets, but would never admit it. He avoids Judge Cranklebaum.
