Oyuki

Origins

Oyuki was once a woman of quiet beauty and deliberate grace—a gifted dessert chef known throughout her village for creating sorbets so perfect they were said to “trap the memory of seasons.”

Then something happened.

She doesn’t talk about it.
But it ended with betrayal, a broken promise, and her final breath beneath a frost-covered tree.

She woke up... changed.
No longer flesh, but frost.
No longer warm, but luminous with vengeance and the cold clarity of grief that never thaws.

And yet, despite her haunting origins, she didn’t seek revenge. Not really.
She came to Snowdrift Bay and opened Chill of the Beyond Creamery, where she now channels her spectral energies into cold confections, whispered judgment, and unnerving ice cream artistry.

Species & Appearance

Oyuki is a vengeful ghost, though she prefers the term “formally ex-mortal.” Her presence is both ethereal and unsettling—a gliding figure draped in flowing layers of mist and fabric that never quite settle, her hair floating weightlessly around her.

Her skin is pale as snowdrift moonlight, her eyes deep gray and glassy, and her breath permanently fogs the air. Jewelry sometimes materializes and vanishes with her moods—especially when she’s annoyed.

She drips frost wherever she goes. The temperature drops when she’s sad. When she’s angry, it snows indoors.

Personality

Oyuki is cool, sharp, introspective, dry-witted, and surprisingly nurturing.
She is often quiet, but never passive. She listens. She observes. And when she speaks, it’s in clipped, perfectly timed phrases that can either shatter illusions or reduce someone to tears.

She’s a haunting.
But she’s your haunting.

She has no time for nonsense but tolerates eccentricity if it comes with sincerity. She deeply values loyalty, subtlety, and silence as a form of communication.

She is an excellent listener. And a devastating roaster when moved.

Profession

Oyuki owns and operates Chill of the Beyond Creamery, the eerily serene ice cream parlor at the edge of the town’s fog line.

Her specialties include:

  • Black sesame spirit swirl

  • Ghostberry ripple

  • Lavender mourning sorbet

  • "You Know What You Did" mint chip (with just a hint of bitterness)

Each scoop is served with a cryptic observation or personal revelation she shouldn't know.

The parlor itself is often empty and silent—but when someone needs comfort, or clarity, or an elegant dessert served with surgical emotional insight, they find themselves at her door.

Relationships

  • Elara: Deep friendship. They meet at dusk to drink haunted tea and judge people wordlessly. They respect each other's power and share quiet, complex laughs.

  • Ramses: Oyuki and Ramses have a long-running, dryly sarcastic rapport. They are each other’s go-to for ancient curses, bad mood advice, and low-emotion hangouts.

  • Kenji: Strongly bonded over their shared cultural heritage. Kenji has told others that Oyuki is the only one who “can truly understand” his experience.

  • Yorn: She respects his steadiness and calm. She once called him “a mountain with eyes.” He called her “surprisingly good at puns,” which made her laugh for the first time in a decade.

  • Brenda: Oyuki sees through Brenda’s bravado instantly and has gently called her out on her feelings for Philip more than once—never cruelly, always precisely.

  • Roberta: Their shared connection to unseen energies, wind, and emotional undercurrents make them excellent confidants. Oyuki appreciates Roberta’s warmth and wandering spirit.

Notable Lore & Moments

  • The Cryo-Curse:
Once accidentally froze the plumbing under the mayor’s office after someone accused her of “just being a glorified froyo ghost.” She claimed it was a “cooling accident.” The pipes didn’t recover for months.

  • The Breakup Sundae:
Created a triple-scoop dessert so emotionally devastating it caused the eater to dump their cheating partner mid-bite. Oyuki said nothing—just handed them a spoon and a tissue.

  • The “All-You-Can-Feel” Night:
Hosted a one-night-only event where townsfolk were encouraged to eat whatever ice cream “called to them.” Several personal breakthroughs, one spontaneous proposal, and two reconciliations occurred.

Quirks and Secrets

  • Sings opera when she thinks no one is listening. Her voice causes glass to hum.

  • Keeps a collection of spoons that “have known grief.”

  • Can taste emotions, but pretends not to.

  • Has a haunted bell above her door that rings only when someone truly needs her.

  • Sleeps suspended in a frost-dim room above her creamery, dreaming in icicles and forgotten lullabies
