Horace the Goose
Origins
Horace appeared during a town fundraiser that had devolved into mild chaos. Without introduction, he leapt onto the stage in a tiny tuxedo, produced a trumpet from seemingly nowhere, and delivered a jazz solo so breathtaking it silenced the crowd and doubled the donations.
Then he stepped to the mic and said:
“You may now proceed. Elegantly, please.”
And just like that, Snowdrift Bay had a goose.
A goose who talks.
A goose who performs.
A goose with standards.
Species & Appearance
Horace is an anthropomorphic Canada goose, tall for his kind, sleek of feather, and always dressed in a flawless black tuxedo with polished shoes, a pocket square, and a trumpet case that somehow sparkles without being glittery.
He has expressive golden eyes, a dramatic stride, and a voice like a Shakespearean actor with jazz timing—rich, precise, and absolutely intentional. He honks, yes—but only for emphasis. And sometimes applause.
Personality
Horace is theatrical, charming, proud, and exceptionally well-spoken.
He speaks in full sentences, often in elaborate metaphors, and peppers his dialogue with well-placed honks to underline key emotions—such as triumph, outrage, or deep artistic satisfaction.
He is:
Passionate about music, dignity, and stagecraft
Allergic to mediocrity
Surprisingly encouraging to young performers—if they “have it”
Prone to dramatic exits, mid-sentence if the vibe shifts
Profession
Horace is a professional trumpeter and unofficial musical enhancement consultant for town events.
He plays at:
Festivals
Weddings (especially the complicated ones)
Spontaneous rooftop jazz brunches
Any scene that might benefit from a soaring solo or slow-building swing ballad
He also occasionally gives lectures titled: “The Art of the Entrance: Flourish, Feather, and Fanfare.”
Relationships
Beatrice (Close Friend): A deep, sincere friendship. He plays in her gardens while she tends to her plants. He once told her, “Your tomatoes have rhythm, Beatrice.” She considers it the highest praise.
Yorn: Horace admires Yorn’s quiet gravitas. He has played accompaniment to several of Yorn’s dramatic silences, unprompted. Yorn calls him “weirdly perfect.”
Elara: Finds her presence “positively cinematic.” Once asked if he could score her life. She didn’t say yes—but didn’t say no.
Aphrodite: They once collaborated at a karaoke night that led to the immediate rise and fall of them as a performing duo. They still hit the stage together now and then.
Philip: Initially intimidated by Horace’s confidence, but deeply respects his artistry. Horace calls him “a haunted bone with exquisite taste.”
Mayor Llama: The mayor refers to Horace as “Sir Fanfare,” and once tried to knight him with a breadstick. Horace allowed it, then requested better lighting.
Notable Lore & Moments
The Rooftop Sonata:
Played a full jazz suite during a thunderstorm atop the café. People gathered in the rain. He closed with a dramatic honk and disappeared into the mist. The Jazz Funeral for a Broken Tuba:
