Elara
Origins
Elara was born in Snowdrift Bay. Her lineage traces back to the original settlers of the town, along with the indigenous people who populated the area for generations.
But if you ask her, she simply “followed the scent of old books and the promise of quiet snow.”
When she reached adulthood, she took immediate ownership of a long-abandoned shop near the edge of town, boarded up and forgotten, and within days it had become the softly glowing, incense-scented, candlelit treasure trove now known as Shadowed Pages Book Haven.
No one remembers seeing her move in. The shelves simply filled overnight.
She’s been in Snowdrift Bay longer than anyone, and has seen (and participated in) its evolution from rustic settlement to… well, whatever it is today.
Species & Vampirism
Yes—Elara is a vampire. The cape-wearing, fang-baring, fog-hissing kind. However, she will be the first to tell you that most of the typical vampire tropes are, in her own words, “only about 60% accurate.”
She’s quiet, refined, and casually immortal. She drinks blood, but it’s usually in the form of handcrafted elderberry-blood tea blends or little elegant vials she keeps in a vintage lunchbox behind the counter.
She is allergic to tackiness, and poor grammar. Garlic she’s fine with, though she claims it “muddles the palate.” Sunlight doesn’t bother her, but she admits it clashes with most of her wardrobe.
She doesn’t hide what she is, but she doesn’t flaunt it either. When asked, she’ll say:
“Yes, I’m a vampire. I also enjoy used poetry collections, the smell of cedar, and judging people who fold page corners.”
Elara’s powers include enhanced senses, a natural hypnotic charm (which she pretends not to use), and the ability to move silently and instantly be behind you with a sigh when you mess up the Dewey Decimal System.
Physical Description
Elara is statuesque, graceful, and always dressed impeccably—usually in long coats, silk scarves, or velvet dresses in deep jewel tones. Her eyes are a deep onyx. Her hair, usually pinned up with antique combs, sometimes spills out like ink in water when she’s tired or focused.
She smells faintly of vintage perfume, cloves, and old paper. Her shadow occasionally moves on its own, especially when someone says something profoundly stupid.
Personality
Elara is elegant, dryly witty, and carries herself with the weary wisdom of someone who’s outlived several fashion eras and still thinks people peaked in the 1920s.
She has no patience for performative nonsense, but adores sincere weirdness. She’ll defend the town’s ghosts, oddballs, and broom-wielding conspiracy theorists with the same fierceness she would a leather-bound first edition.
Despite her aloof exterior, Elara is deeply warm—though she shows affection in subtle ways: leaving your favorite book on the counter, straightening your collar with a quiet “hmph,” or hexing someone who insulted you without mentioning it.
Profession
Elara is the proud and unflinchingly judgmental owner of Shadowed Pages Book Haven—Snowdrift Bay’s beloved bookstore and informal salon for the strange, the literary, and the faintly cursed.
She stocks everything from forgotten folklore to obscure cookbooks for ghosts. Her recommendation system is less algorithm and more “I know who you are now, and this book will ruin you in the best way.”
She runs monthly midnight readings, where residents gather to drink absinthe-laced tea and read banned texts by candlelight while something gently scratches at the windows.
Relationships
Yorn (Husband): The quiet to her intensity. The mountain to her moonlight. They are the town’s most solid couple—calm, strong, and deeply attuned. They have nightly rituals involving tea, silent reading, and watching snowfall without speaking for hours. They rarely say “I love you” aloud. They don’t need to.
David (Balloon Animal Dog): She claims David was a gift from Yorn, but no one is sure how he works. She once told a customer, “He came from a dream I forgot to finish.” She adores him deeply and will hiss at anyone who tries to pop him.
Brenda and Beatrice: Her shopping and spell exchange companions.
Oyuki: Fellow midnight creature. They exchange gossip and scream into the void together recreationally.
Ramses: They have a deep bond over their shared immortality, which most others cannot relate to. Elara was the first one to greet Ramses when he woke; she could sense his life force stirring.
Notable Lore & Moments
The Scarf of Soft Silence: A scarf Elara gave Yorn that is enchanted to cancel small talk within a six-foot radius. She insists it was a “birthday joke.” It wasn’t.
The Book That Weeps: Elara has a book in her shop that sobs when anyone with unresolved guilt touches it. She refuses to remove it.
The Ex-Lover in the Mirror: There's a mirror behind the counter that sometimes shows a brooding vampire named Corvin. Elara ignores him. No one asks questions.
Town Hall Incident: During a zoning meeting gone wrong, she turned a disruptive council member’s clipboard into bats. She claimed it was a “paperwork error.”
Quirks and Secrets
She occasionally levitates without realizing it when deeply moved by poetry.
Her bookmark collection is rumored to be sentient.
Her laugh, when genuine, can fog glass.
She still writes letters by hand and seals them with wax. Sometimes they’re addressed to people who haven’t been born yet.
