David

Origins

No one is entirely sure where David came from—not even Yorn or Elara.

One day, he was simply... there. Sitting on their porch. Perfectly shaped, gently squeaking, tail wagging, his body composed entirely of expertly twisted, sky-blue balloons.

Elara blinked.

Yorn asked, “Did you order that?”

David barked.
The balloon tail wiggled.
They let him in.

Species & Appearance

David is a living balloon animal dog, roughly the size of a beagle, crafted from shiny blue latex balloons in perfect, cartoonish symmetry.

He has:

  • A long, squeaky snout

  • A cheerful, round tail

  • Little balloon legs that somehow manage stairs

He makes soft squeaky sounds when he walks or runs and emits occasional high-pitched wheezes when he yawns or stretches.

He’s apparently indestructible. Many have tried.
He’s also impervious to popping, extreme temperatures, and bad vibes.

Personality

David is loyal, playful, expressive, and just a little mischievous.

Despite his lack of a real face, he somehow communicates everything—from joy to defiance to hunger to philosophical ennui—through subtle squeaks, head tilts, and tiny hops.

He is:

  • Incredibly protective of Elara and Yorn

  • Mildly offended by the concept of leashes

  • Prone to chasing shadows and inflated rivals

He also has a stubborn streak. He once refused to come inside for three days after someone tried to feed him a real bone.

Behavior & Quirks

  • Sleeps curled in a perfect circle like a balloon donut

  • Loves getting “pets,” which causes his surface to emit faint kazoo-like sounds

  • Occasionally inflates slightly when excited, then deflates with a long whooooosh when tired

  • Appears to understand English, sarcasm, and possibly existential dread

  • Wags his tail rhythmically to early 2000s hip hop. No one’s quite sure why.

He cannot bark in the traditional sense, but his enthusiastic squeaks carry surprising emotional clarity.

Relationships

  • Yorn: David sees Yorn as his alpha, walking pillow, and designated carrier during long town events. He often curls around Yorn’s arm and rides along silently.

  • Elara: Treats Elara like royalty. He sits at her feet when she reads and squeaks disapprovingly at people who interrupt her. She has a tiny pillow for him in the corner of Shadowed Pages.

  • Philip: Philip finds him “weird but loyal.” David once peed on one of his horror DVDs. Philip believes it was a commentary.

  • Brenda: Adored by Brenda, who insists on dressing him in little vests. He tolerates this, but only because she lets him lick whipped cream off her fingers.

  • Spike: Tried to sell him helium once. David inflated slightly and then chased Spike with horrifying squeaky fury.

  • Whirly: Once challenged David to a “best inflatable” contest. David was declared the winner before Whirly could even finish his sentence.

  • Pinatius Maximus: David’s closest fellow “pet” friend. The two often play in silence, communicate entirely through nods and squeaks, and have been known to attend events together as a surreal but beloved duo. Pinatius protects David from overly enthusiastic children, and David once defended Pinatius from a confused party guest with a stick. Their bond is unbreakable and inexplicably wholesome.

Notable Lore & Moments

  • The Great Balloon Parade:
     Mistaken for a float. Joined the parade. Won best in show. Accepted the ribbon with a dignified squeak.

  • The Squeakstorm Incident:
     During a magical weather malfunction, David began hovering six inches off the ground and conducting static electricity like a conductor. The storm passed. David was victorious.

  • The Deflation Scare:
     Once “collapsed” dramatically to avoid bath time. Reinflated five minutes later and trotted smugly out of the bathroom.
