Barnaby Blackbeard
Origins
No one knows how Barnaby arrived in Snowdrift Bay.
One day, there was a storm. The next morning, the Salty Kraken Tavern stood where an abandoned fish market used to be, reeking of rum and adventure.
Barnaby claims he sailed into town on a rogue wave, riding a barrel of mead and “a scandalous reputation.” Whether this is true is unclear—but it’s the version he tells loudly and with great conviction, so it might as well be canon.
He has since declared himself “landlocked, but not law-bound,” and has remained in town ever since.
Species & Appearance
Barnaby Blackbeard is a pirate, through and through. Whether or not he’s technically human is questionable—some say he’s cursed, some say he’s enchanted, and some say he’s just very committed to a bit.
He wears a long, seaworn coat with mismatched buttons, towering boots, and a tricorn hat that seems to twitch in the wind. His beard is immense and unmistakably black, sometimes adorned with tiny braids containing:
teeth (species unknown)
charms
small bones
a bottle opener
He has a golden tooth that glints when he’s about to lie and an eyepatch that may or may not be necessary. He claims to have a peg leg—but no one’s ever seen him remove his boot to check.
Personality
Barnaby is bombastic, endlessly theatrical, and dangerously good at making terrible ideas sound fun.
He loves:
Shouting “TO THE KRAKEN!” for no reason
Telling stories so long they span three drinks and a thunderstorm
Starting games with no rules and declaring himself the winner anyway
Despite the bravado, he has a heart of gold (or possibly bronze—he won’t say). He looks after his crew (read: the townsfolk) with fierce devotion, even if he expresses it through shouting, dramatic sighs, and deeply confusing nautical metaphors.
He is not subtle. But he is genuine.
Profession
Barnaby owns and operates the Salty Kraken Tavern, Snowdrift Bay’s loudest, rowdiest, most beloved watering hole.
The tavern offers:
Extremely strong drinks with names like Barnacle’s Wrath and Siren’s Whisper
Rowdy open mic nights
Frequent pirate-themed trivia competitions (he wins them all, even when not playing)
A ship’s wheel that spins itself when someone lies
Questionable soup
He is not a chef. He’s made this very clear. He “assembles sustenance,” and believes seasoning is for cowards.
Relationships
Yorn: Barnaby has immense respect for Yorn and once tried to name a cocktail after him. Yorn stopped it. The drink was renamed Snow & Regret.
Elara: They have a mutual appreciation for drama. Barnaby once tried to impress her by dramatically reading Wuthering Heights during a thunderstorm. She was amused. He fainted.
Philip: Barnaby loves Philip’s weird skeleton energy and insists he join every tavern storytelling night. Philip does, but only under protest. They once accidentally started a ghost cult. It was a Tuesday.
Sir Reginald: Despite Reginald’s rigid moral code and Barnaby’s complete lack of one whatsoever, the two have struck up a surprising bond.
Spike: Co-chaos agents. Once invented a cocktail together that started a spontaneous dance riot. Still banned from using blenders after 10 p.m.
Friends: Most of the town. He insists everyone is part of “the crew.” Even if they don’t know it.
Foes:
The Health Inspector (“An absolute tyrant with no soul or taste for adventure.”)
Axel Woodsworth, who Barnaby refers to as “the walking mood dampener”
